Recent and upcoming events

The Consortium is involved in a number of local, regional and national activities. The major event is the Annual General Meeting, usually held in May or June, at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in Fossgate, York. It is held in partnership with the York Civic Trust and has three components:

  • The formal business meeting;
  • The award of bursaries to apprentices and to professional crafts persons and conservators to advance their skills;
  • The John Shannon Lecture in memory of a former Chairman of the Civic Trust who did so much to protect and conserve York’s built heritage.

Other activities include:

  • Participating in the annual Wild about Wood week-end in September at the Castle Howard Arboretum
  • Annual meeting with students attending the MA in Conservation Studies at the University of York;
  • Representing the Consortium at the York College Construction Awards Ceremony in March when a bursary prize, funded by the York Consortium, is given to a trainee;
  • Occasional outings to view interesting conservation projects;
  • Visits to practitioners’ workshops;
  • Attending craft-based events in the region.

News Highlights

York provides new President for CIOB

Rebecca Thompson, YCCC Committee Member became the 114th President of the
Chartered Institute of Building in June. The CIOB has 47,000 members worldwide and
strives to promote the science and practice of building and construction for the benefit of
society. 

Bursary alumnus awarded PGC bursary

Russell Swift, winner of a 2016 York Foundation for Conservation and Craftsmanship bursary, has been awarded a bursary by the Provincial Grand Charity.  Russell specialises in carpentry restoration work and has most recently worked on projects in the Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham areas.
