Bursary Awards 2011

At its AGM (for details of the AGM click here) on 27 June, the Foundation awarded its annual bursaries.  We had 23 applications this year (16 last year), which was reduced to nine for the judges to consider.  The judges (Stewart Evison for the HHA), John Halliwell for the Freemasons, Henry Dean for the Merchant Taylors, Phil Thomas and Glenn Young) met in early May, and seven of the short list managed to get to the Kings Manor to meet them; the remaining two were represented by their boss or course supervisor.  A total of £9,500 was awarded this year, details of the recipients are given below:

To assist the taking on of a new apprentice:

£2,000 to roofing contractor Geoff Neal (the £1,000 HHA Award supplemented by the Foundation) for his new lead-working apprentice

To assist increased skills or knowledge:

£1,000 to stonemason Thomas Soare to help with travel costs as an SPAB William Morris fellow (the Freemasons’ award)

£1,500 to carpenter Joe Irving for a West Dean course on furniture making

£1,500 to Megan Stacey to go towards the fees for the York University MA course in stained glass

£500 to Katie Harrison also for the York MA course

£1,500 to archivist Carol Peacock towards the fees for her MA course in Conservation at Camberwell College

£1,000 to archivist Rachel Greenwood for an ARA course module in parchment conservation

            £500 to silversmith Shelley Anderson to meet some of the costs of training with an expert coppersmith
