As a sculptor of letters, stone carver and designer Charles Smith's commissioned work includes commemorative, architectural and civic pieces; for public/private buildings, cathedrals, churches, churchyards, also private collections.  He lists music, literature, poetry and various aspects of natural history as important factors in his work.

He is a member of the York Art Workers Association, Letter Exchange, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and is included in the Crafts Council, Index of Selected Makers.
