The NRM specialises in the conservation of locomotives and rolling stock, including their restoration to working order for operation on both main line and preserved railways.  It also provides facilities for the conservation of a wide array of museum artefacts, ranging from models to station furniture.  The varied nature of this work calls on the skills of a team of engineers and fitters, a coachbuilder, painter/signwriter, conservator and conservation assistants.

The NRM is also the location of the Yorkshire Rail Academy and in partnership with other bodies, including York College, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, Derwent Training, Yorkshire Forward and the Learning & Skills Council the museum provides specialist training for the rail industry and heritage organisations.  This includes courses in track safety, customer service and workshop health and safety, and training in heritage conservation.
