The workshops of the NRM are
incorporated into the new development at the Museum called “The Works”.
They are equipped to undertake a wide range of work relating to the
Museum’s three-dimensional collections. A
public gallery runs through the workshop at high level and affords the best
possible view for our visitors, of the work in progress.
The work going on in the workshop at present includes the following
typical projects:
- The
conservation/restoration of an 1891 North Eastern Railway snowplough.
- The
preparation of the Museum’s flagship locomotive “Green Arrow” for its
next revenue earning trip on the main line.
- The
cleaning and preparation for display, of railway seals and passes.
The
varied nature of this work calls on the skills of a dedicated team of skilled
engineers, a coach-builder and a painter/sign-writer, together with conservation
assistants.
The NRM
is using this facility to bring benefit to its 3-D collections, especially the
large objects such as railway vehicles, which have suffered from inadequate
storage facilities in the past.
