The studio was established in 1976 to clean and conserve paintings on canvas, panel and wood structures to the highest standards of conservation for private clients, historic houses, churches, museums and galleries.
Photographs and detailed reports are prepared during the work, ensuring that ethical guidelines are followed and recorded at every stage. X-ray, infra-red, ultra-violet and chemical analysis and are used to aid examination.
There is generally no charge for initial examinations or quotations, collection surveys and assessment. With full professional indemnity insurance, the practice covers the UK and Europe and is included on the ‘Conservation Register’ maintained by ‘Icon’. Francis Downing is an Accredited Conservator with the Institute of Conservation and is also a member of the Association of Security Consultants and the Association of Consulting Scientists.
